This year we’ve chosen a selection of songs (and a piano solo) on the theme of Fantasy and Fairytales. It’s an international program, with music from England, America and Europe, as well as contributions from Australia’s own Don Kay (with text by Mike Cooper) and John Polglase. In preparing this recital, we’ve enjoyed revisiting some favourite composers from previous concerts (Madeleine Dring and Samuel Barber), getting ready for our first performance of Schubert’s famous Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel, discovering some Szymanowksi songs that blend Tatra mountains folksong with the slightly surrealist poetry of Julian Tuwim, and learning that Gustav Holst wrote a lot of other music besides The Planets. The concert begins and ends with fairies (thanks to Amy Beach and Liza Lehmann) but explores many other worlds in between.
